XL Leisure Group went into administration in the early hours of Friday with debts of £143 million, leaving 85,000 tourists stranded abroad and another 200,000 holidays written off. Some of the industry's biggest names, including Sir Richard Branson and the British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh, responded with predictions that the credit crunch and crippling fuel costs would bankrupt more airlines, travel agents and package firms in the coming months.
